Holder DNA Genealogy Project - Group AHolder family of Bertie and Chatham Counties, North Carolina
This page was revised on November 18, 2018. The earliest known ancestors of Group A Holders are Thomas Holder (abt 1710-1774) and Susannah Bunch, who were in Bertie County NC in the 1700s. Bertie is in northeastern North Carolina, and was probably settled mainly by English-speaking immigrants to southeastern Virginia. Group A Holders subsequently show up in central North Carolina, especially Wake, Orange and Chatham counties, and then in Cherokee County, in southwestern North Carolina. From there they move westward to Tennessee and beyond. We don't know if all the Group A Holders trace back to Thomas and Susannah. Upgrading some of the tests to 111 markers might help answer this question. Sample #001: USA: Thomas Holder & Susannah Bunch, Bertie Co. NC > John Holder & Mary Jackson, Bertie & Orange Co. NC > Aaron Holder & Rebeccah Evans; Orange, Wake & Chatham Co. NC > John Holder & Maryanne Elizabeth Smith; Chatham Co. NC > Joseph Isaiah Holder & Sarah Eveline Worthington; Chatham County, NC to Alachua County, Florida Sample #003 USA: Thomas Holder & Susannah Bunch, Bertie Co. NC > John Holder & Mary Jackson, Bertie & Orange Co. NC > Aaron Holder & Rebeccah Evans; Orange, Wake & Chatham Co. NC > John Holder & Maryanne Elizabeth Smith Chatham Co. NC > John Henry Holder & Eldora Holland, Chatham County, NC Sample #004 USA: Thomas Holder & Susannah Bunch, Bertie Co. NC > John Holder & Mary Jackson, Bertie & Orange Co. NC > Aaron Holder & Rebeccah Evans; Orange, Wake & Chatham Co. NC > Gilbert Evans Holder (1811-after 1880) Wake County, NC and Lincoln, Bedford and Moore County, TN > Aaron Wesley Holder (1834-1907) Wake County, NC and Lincoln, Bedford amd Marshall County, TN Sample #013 USA: William P. Holder (born 1815 in Murphy, Cherokee County, NC) & Margaret Sherrill; William Clayton Holder (born Oct. 22, 1848 in NC, died November 09, 1923) & Harriet Evelyn Dunlop; William Newman Holder (born December 31, 1875 in Parker County Texas, died January 09, 1945 Deming, New Mexico) & Dora Leddenham. This sample shares ancestry with #017. Previously we had designated this as group A2a, based on the variant marker DYS458. However, two other samples (017 and 034) share a fairly recent common ancestry with 013 but have the typical value at DYS458. We are therefore now grouping this with the rest of the A1 samples. Sample #014 USA: William Holder & Mary Ann Hardin?? > Daniel Holder & Nancy Standeford Orange Co. NC > William Henderson Holder & Nancy Hauser, Stokes/Forsyth Co. NC > Daniel P. Holder, Indiana. This sample shares ancestry with #076. Sample #017 USA: William P. Holder (ca. 1815 NC - ca. 1860 Polk Co. AR) > William Clayton Holder (1848 NC - 1923 Lynn Co. TX) > Ben Rogers Holder (1889-1968 TX). This sample shares ancestry with #013. Sample #020 USA: William B. Holder, born 1863 (location unknown), married Ollie Jones in Alabama and later moved to Wichita Falls, TX. This sample matches the A1 group over 25 markers; we also have data for markers 26-37 for this sample. Sample #027 USA: Thomas Holder & Susannah Bunch, Bertie Co. NC > Elisha Holder > Shadrack Holder b. 1776 in Bertie Co. NC and Minnie Dunning > Thomas Holder b. 1807 KY and Lucinda Hildrith > Peter H. Holder b. 1832 KY and Henrietta White > Peter O. Holder b. 1877 Bollinger Co. MO. This sample differs from the other group A samples at DYS 447, a relatively stable marker, and we designated this as a new subgroup, A3. Now that the previous A2 subgroup has been consolidated into group A1, this becomes A2. Sample #090 also has this change at DYS 447. Sample #034 USA: Newman Jackson Holder (1818-1896), born NC, died Texas, married Martha Ann Moss in Cherokee Co. NC 1847; in Hood Co. TX 1870s-1880s, moved to Donley Co. TX late 1880s. Like sample 013, this one has a connection to Cherokee Co. NC, and it seems likely that William P. Holder and Newman Jackson Holder are brothers, probably sons of William Holder and Elizabeth Jackson. Sample 017 shares this lineage. Sample 034 has several differences from the typical A1 group pattern, but all are in rapidly changing markers. These differences could be useful in future work in sorting out branches of this family. Sample #075 USA: information not yet in Sample #076 USA: William Henderson Holder (1822-1864), born NC, married Nancy Barnet Hauser (1824-1860) [also ancestors of sample 014] > James Wesley Holder (1845-1929) b. Stokes Co. NC, married Margaret Celestus Eubank in 1869 in Bartholomew Co. IN > William Arthur Holder (1872-1944) m. Lillie Elnora Hollister; in Indiana in 1880, in Houston Co. TN by 1894. Although this participant shares more recent ancestors in common with 014 than with the other group A members, they differ at the rapidly changing marker DYS458. Sample #090 USA: (Adam?) James Holder (1799-1882) NC to Monroe Co. GA > Thomas Jefferson Holder (1839-1889) > John Thomas Holder (1877-1956), Henry Co. GA. James may be the son of Elisha Holder (~1770-1826) of Bertie Co., NC, who names a son James in his will. Like sample #027, this one differs from the other group A samples at marker DYS 447. Sample #027 is a putative descendant of an Elisha Holder also, but if the dates are correct, that Elisha is a generation older than the putative father of James. Sample #123 USA: No family history has been provided. This person is a perfect match for #001 over the 25 markers tested.
The Holder A group belongs to Haplogroup R1b1b2.

The donor of sample 004 has upgraded to 111 markers and has also done the Big Y-500 test. We would like to see a few additional Group A participants upgrade to 111..
